Color background (Design/Themes)

I need to turn the white part of the forum black. The space on the out side of the box's. Like the whole background. Is this possible?

after looking around I see my question was redundant! :-D But I did read what you wrote about it. And it did help immensely! I am not near as afraid of the css now.
