Does anybody know if there is an easy way to facilitate the use of the html in posts.

I don't think that there's any easy way. The reason behind using BBCodes is to prevent nasty things like script injection and the like. Therefore all html-tags are stripped from the post, and BBCodes are converted into their html equivalents by the forum's script(s). Even if you allow only registered users to post, there is no guarantee, that the code they produce will 'work' (if you are writting webpages, it also takes a lot of work to get all stuff valid and running).

Some of our advanced users though would appreciate the ability to incorporate tables and have more control over image placement.

I can understand this desire very well, because my forum is science oriented; tables and the like would be nice too...

In broad terms we are delighted with the operation of My Little Forum with the exception of an ongoing problem that users are "logged out" if they have the posting window open for too long and then end up losing what can be often an hours work composing a post.

Oh, you still have this problem?!
The average time I'm working on a post is about 45 minutes and I use an external editor just for convenience. I'm running the current version (1.7.3) and never experienced (or heard of from my users) this log-out problem...

We have tried other forums, such as PHPBB, but universally our users far prefer the layout and style that is possible utilising MLF.
