Release of version 2.4.17, contact form, senders address (General)

by Magma, Tuesday, January 08, 2019, 12:54 (1927 days ago)

I also noticed that any user or guest using the contact form, the email I get as forum admin shows the sender as my own forum email address, not the email address of the guest or user like it did with 2.4.8.

So I now have a load of emails and I don't know who has sent them to me because all the senders is my email address.

Maybe time to revert back.

Hello

I also noticed that any user or guest using the contact form, the email I get as forum admin shows the sender as my own forum email address …

Yes, because you (or your forum) is the sender of the e-mail. Works as intended.

… not the email address of the guest or user like it did with 2.4.8.

Yes, that was wrong and now it is right.

So I now have a load of emails and I don't know who has sent them to me because all the senders is my email address.

Do you get copies of the e-mails or the e-mails in itself (instead the real receiver)?

I don't know your configuration. The e-mails get sent with the forum e-mail-address as "From" (sender) and the e-mail-adress of an registered user or a via form field given e-mail-address from a visitor in the "ReplyTo" field (purpose should be self describing). In every case we tested, an e-mail got sent to the wanted address and not to the forum address. In every case we tested, the reply was sent to the given address (by form or by user-data) and not to the forum address.

Maybe time to revert back.

No, because the old behaviour caused other forum operators to be suspected to be spam senders.

Tschö, Auge

When you get a mail that appears to be from yourself, click on the mailheader.
In the "Reply-to" field you will see the senders mailaddress.
Tested in Gmail.

Thank you Tommy I realised this later on. I use the mail app in Windows 8.1 and to see who sent the email from my forum to me (even though it's an email I will not be replying to) I have to click the reply button, look at the sender's email address then I have to delete the draft reply email which seems a weird way of finding out the sender.
