IRC is ok, but I find it boring. I rather use php or AJAX based chat scripts.

I didn't find one I liked. Also as I said the cpu overhead was too much - php is grotty as heck on arm arch. I was pretty restricted by that.

Irc is like renting a house. Your own php chat on your host is like owning the house.
