I need to put a certain script tag in the HTML output but only when a post is shown ?not on the other pages)

i was able to get it to work by editing main.tpl but then the script tag is in every page. I need it only when a post is clicked on. I tried editing thread.inc.tpl but it doesn't seem to work.

any pointers?
