time_difference in Advanced Settings (General)

by Magma, Wednesday, March 22, 2017, 22:33 (2590 days ago)

I asked before about my forum time being a couple of minutes faster than the real exact time. You said I would need to contact my host which I did but now my forum time is ahead again.

I was just wondering what this below in the advanced settings does?

time_difference
difference between server and forum time in minutes

am I able to put in there -2 or 2 or something?

Just thought I would ask before I did anything.

Hello

Yeh, it was in this thread.

You said I would need to contact my host which I did but now my forum time is ahead again.

Your hosting company corrected the server time and now the time differs again?

Why not trying it? Yes, you can set a few minutes as difference.

But if your webserver is "to fast" you will adjust the difference again and again. IMHO this is not satisfying. Your problem would go "poof!" if the webserver would adjust it's system time with ntp over a time server. I would expect it to be the standard nowadays.

Thanks for your reply, I contacted them once again and they changed it to the right time. Just hope it stays like that now.

It's nice, that your hoster corrected the server time. The question is, why they don't use the standard procedure to ask time servers (over ntp) for the actual time once or twice a day. With this method you and your hoster have never again to waste a single thought to the server time.
