Am I correct in thinking when updating from 1.6, 1.6 forum is not changed, all we are doing is creating a new forum and moving the database into the new forum with changes made to the moved database?
I have been putting off the updates for years for fear of loosing the old data.

No, you are not correct. The database structure of mlf2 is different to the structure of mlf1. There is a thread with instructions for the update path. Additionally is there a new version (1.8), in a low progress of development. But it is at the moment not ready for installation or update.

Aside from your question is it a good idea to make more or less frequent backups of the forums database.
