Do we really need CAPTCHA for version 2? (one argument for it would be to have the possibility to be independent from Akismet)

I have a forum using version 1.7.

CAPTCHA works very well since it allows my forum users to be able to post without having to register. Not making REGISTRATION a requirement increases the number of posts and discussions in my forum, and having CAPTCHA deters spam. So the two together work very well for my forum.

CAPTCHA works very well since it allows my forum users to be able to post without having to register.

There are now Akismet and Bad-Behavior as replacements. And they work pretty good without bothering the users. On this forum you can also post without being registered.

Thanks Alex. Yes, I realize that people can post without having to register in version 2.0 as well. But in version 1.7, when people are posting anonymously without registration, they are asked to do a CAPTCHA calculation, this is very good because it deters trouble makers who just want to post and cause trouble in the forum.

Right now in this very forum, I can post anonymously without registration, if I were to cause trouble in the forum, I could easily post 20, 30 , 50 posts and flood the forum with useless information. With a CAPTCHA, it will deter me from doing so.

I am not sure if I communicate properly.....sorry if I am not clear.

If I visted the responses from the first posting of a thread, they don't marked as visited cause it's another uri

Does it really make sense to show only replies? I would agree to mark the latest postings whether they are reply or thread start.

Yes, this is due to a (test) modification I made.

Can you add:

colour entries as viewed, once viewed in multi-thread?

Right now board members say multi-thread is useless without this.

If implemented it should colour individual entries viewed in the multithread, instead of the entire thread as new relies could be added. I found this out trying to implement myself :/

Does it really make sense to show only replies?

I show the last five answered threads on the mainpage and not in the forum...

In my opinion, yes. A thread which have 5 answers will show like:
Alex, will this work ?
Alex, will this work ?
Alex, will this work ?
Alex, will this work ?
Alex, will this work ?

That's not a information. This thread has a (very) hight weight cause it is very interesting. A non-popular thread gos under.

Category Administration

by needhelp338, Tuesday, April 24, 2007, 15:15 (6174 days ago) @ Alex

Hi Alex,

I noticed that in version 1.7, we have the option to move the forum CATEGORY up and down the drop down menu. But such option is no longer available in the 2.0 beta. Am I correct ?

That feature is very helpful if one wants to re-arrange the sequence of the forum categories in the drop down menu.

BTW, thanks for including the text color editor in your list. That is another helpful tool to have.

Thanks.

If JavaScript is enabled you can just drag and drop the table rows. If not you should see up/down arrows on the right hand side.

A la carte add-on

by needhelp338, Tuesday, April 24, 2007, 18:47 (6173 days ago) @ Alex

Hi Alex,

I know it's probably a lot more complicated than what I imagined, but I thought I would ask anyway.

Can some of these new features be treated like an "a la carte" add-on ? Meaning the foundation will be version 1.7 or 2.0, and then any new features will be an optional add-on depending on the person's preferences ?

If you provide the script and which files the script should be added to for each optional feature, would that work?

This way people can pick and choose the optional features they want and make the changes themselves ?

a la carte add-on ? [...]

Desirable but unfortunately not that easy to implement. Many features affect other files, templates or database tables.

If you for example want to port the AJAX preview from version 2.0 to 1.7 you need the JavaScript functions to show/hide the preview bubble, JavaScript functions for the AJAX request, a PHP script which fetches the message data from the database and parses the message, HTML and CSS for the preview bubble.

But I try to make as many as possible adjustable in the forum settings.

Hi Alex,

Right now the MIX view (view all display) looks kind of messy, especially when you have a lot of posts in the thread. It is hard to follow with each post indented to the right.

I am not sure if what you said about INLINE coding refers to making the MIX view (view all display) less messy and easier to follow.

It would be nice if that is the case.

Thanks

New Window for hyperlink

by needhelp338, Thursday, April 26, 2007, 20:01 (6171 days ago) @ Alex

Another suggestion,

when we click on a link in a post, I think it would be better that the link will prompt a NEW PAGE to open. This way we can still stay on the board while viewing the info from the hyperlink on a new browser.

Thanks ALEX for all your hard work. I just found your paypal donation page from the old site, will definitely make a donation and contribute toward your efforts.

Dear msd!

Hmm, but it still would be a good idea to make it an option..

IMHO it's impossible to make it an option, because the forum's software generates '(X)HTML 1.0 Strict'.

I'm having pretty much links to other website, and it's annoying to selct' open in new window' all the time, just because I want the forum to stay on.

Modern browsers - even IE7 - allow for opening links in new tabs (you may even set this behaviour as the default).

Isn't there a quick workaround ? Or is it I'm just not seeing it ?

Change the (X)HTML-variant from 'Strict'...

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN"

...to 'Transitional':

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"

Change all scripts/templates to generate links of the form:

<a href="http://domain.tdl/foo.htm" target="_blank">bar</a>

Remark: As already said, many people consider websites opening new browser-windows an annoyance.

Hi Alex,

Don't mind me, I am just putting as many thing as I can come up with...you pick whatever you want to include in the final 2.0 version.

Right now the upload feature only allows people to upload still images such as JPEG, GIF etc, can you also modify the script to allow people to upload videos such as videos with .wmv .mpg .rm extensions ?

Many people are using videos in the forum these days, it would be very helpful to allow people to upload video clips.

uploaded pics folder

by needhelp338, Friday, April 27, 2007, 15:52 (6171 days ago) @ Alex

Right now all uploaded images are placed in one folder that everybody have access to in the PICTURES UPLOAD feature.

This will be fine in the beginning. But over time, as more and more pics are uploaded to the forum, the # of image files in this folder will grow exponentially, will that cause the system to crash or be unstable ?

I have people uploading on average about 10 pics per day, in one year there will be about 3650 image files in that folder.

Is there a way to streamline this or even NOT let this "uploaded picturess" folder show up ? I just don't want the forum to crash when people click on that folder.

Deleting posts within a thread

by needhelp338, Friday, April 27, 2007, 16:05 (6171 days ago) @ Alex
edited by needhelp338, Friday, April 27, 2007, 16:12

Hi Alex,

I just noticed that if I delete a particular post within a thread, all the posts that are below the one that is being deleted will be erased as well.

For example, there are 5 individual posts in a thread. Post #1, Post #2, Post #3, Post #4, Post #5.

Right now if i delete post #3, then both post #4 and post #5 will be deleted as well.

Is there a way to configure the script so that if post #3 is deleted, then somehow post #4 and #5 will still remain on the board ?

This is important, I hope there is a way to do that.

Can we put the deleted post in HIDE or HIDDEN mode so that the post still remains in the thread, but nobody can see it, hence it does not disrupt the natural flow of the thread ? I think this is how some forum softwares are coded to do. They simply make the "deleted" post as a hidden post so that people cannot see the post on the board even though it's still there. Would that work ?

thanks

Board Summary default

by needhelp338, Monday, April 30, 2007, 14:29 (6168 days ago) @ Alex

Many people on my site said it is very confusing that the first thing they see is ALL the posts from ALL categories are grouped together at the default page, eg: www.mydomain.com/forum/

They said it is very hard for them to focus on the topics they want to discuss.

Is there a way to have a BOARD SUMMARY page like most other forums and then from the BOARD SUMMARY page people choose which category they want to view?

For example, a simple BOARD SUMMARY showing the following, and people click the forum they want to go to ? Is that possible?

Thanks....

Category Name # 1
Category Description # 1
Total # of posts in Category # 1

Category Name # 2
Category Description #2
Total # of posts in Category # 2

Category Name #3
Category Description #3

Hello

The BOARD SUMMARY or FORUM SUMMARY index page is very important.

I disagree. I think it's not to much work, to select one category from the select list. On other side I want to see all threads and then select some of them, but thats my opinion.

As compromise it is maybe an option to set a cookie for the last selected category to load this one by the next visit.

by needhelp338, Wednesday, May 09, 2007, 20:27 (6158 days ago) @ Auge

It's ok if you only have a few categories in the forum. But if you have close to 10 different categories, it loses the FOCUS. People have no idea where to go, all they see is all the posts from all different categories all grouped together on one page. It will be hard to attract NEW forum members, they get turned off when there is no clear sense of topics or categories.

FIRST impression is very important. We want to make it easy for people to see what categories are available the moment they enter the forum.

Almost every member from my site said we need a clear summary in the beginning so that they know where to navigate for the topics they like.

If we have have this feature, mylittleforum will be unbeatable. It will most definitely be the best board in the world.

I understand your problem. But the great plus of "my little forum" is the simplicity. You (not you as a person) can have many boards with a menu like you describe it.

If there are features like this (not only this one) "my little forum" will be no more "my little forum". What would other users of the script, who don't want to have this feature(s), say, when "my little forum" is like all other boards? Why they should use this and not one of the others?

Full ACK!

In the past I decided to use MLF because of it's simplicity.
And because both user groups could be pleased: Board View AND Thread View lovers .

But now we are loosing Users. I asked them why they leave.
For sure there are some Users which changed their topic and are not further
interested in our Forum at general. But most of them answered me,
that our Forum Software was missing some basic features.

The Board Overview was one of the most named features.
Looking forward to 2.0 I expect to loose all the users if there ist only the Thread view left.

They do not need Avatares an all the funny and colored features of the heavy Board scripts. But they are missing some basic functions which make it easier to read what is new.

They argued exactly the way needhelp338 does.

It is nice to have a simple Forum script, but it isn't without users.

Board View and Board summary are needed main features.
Without this MLF is going to be a project for a closed user circle.

I would not like to do so much work on a project like this without finding acceptance.

MLF had some larger installations in the last years.
Most of them changed their Software inbetween just because of missing basic Featuress.

IMHO if - any - forum's topic is interesting, the styles - and underlying techniques - should not count that much. If it's just another 'me too' forum, fancy appearances become the main thing... :-D

The Board Overview was one of the most named features.
Looking forward to 2.0 I expect to loose all the users if there ist only the Thread view left.

Hhm again. Not a single user in my forum changed to the board view in the personal profile - but I must confess, the forum's topic is scientifically oriented - rendering the user not a representative sample...

They do not need Avatares an all the funny and colored features of the heavy Board scripts. But they are missing some basic functions which make it easier to read what is new.

Even in the 'old' version it was/is possible to change the order of posts (forum.php line 41):

 if (empty($order)) $order="last_answer";

instead of

 if (empty($order)) $order="time";

MLF had some larger installations in the last years.
Most of them changed their Software inbetween just because of missing basic Featuress.

convert to:

<img src="http://example.org/img.png" alt="My Picture" />

I think it's better than left or right, isnt it?
