Yeah, I would also like to have all threads expanded by default. I may take a dive and check what needs to be changed.

In 2.2.6 there is a user setting field in user database table called fold_threads. If set to 1 all threads are expanded by default. Only problem is that there is no code implemented to configure this in the user profile from the frontend which can be easily solved, but fro now if you just want this to be default for all users change this field for all users to 1 using phpmyadmin for example and in register.inc.php change ".intval($settings['fold_threads'])." to "1" in order for this to be default for new users.
