is it possible to further restrict access to certain categories?

So far I can have categories accessible to admins/mods/users, but is there a way to have a category only accessible by certain users while another category might be accessed by another set of users again?

I guess it is not possible out of the box? Do you think there is a tweak which is not too cumbersome which allows to implement that myself?
